SMS Europe Trip

The South Bands have been exchanging with the Jugenblasorchester (Youth Band) of Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany, since 1979. Every four years, the two bands take a trip to visit the others' community. Students stay in the homes of their hosts and participate in performances, social activities, and visits to cultural, educational, and entertainment destinations in the host's communities. Each group really rolls out the red carpet for the other!

When we visit Bietigheim, we always include a second destination in Europe. In the past, we have seen London, Paris, Munich, Salzburg, and Venice. These trips are amazing!

Members of the South Symphonic Band are invited to go, but not required. Other students may be invited depending on instrumentation needs. All band students are welcomed and encouraged to host visiting German students. This is truly a unique experience that so many of our graduates claim as the highlight of their high school career and has had major influence on many students' college and professional choices after their trip! Our exchange led to Bietigheim becoming Overland Park's only international sister city. In recent years, South's orchestra has also joined the exchange.
