1st Semester Finals in the band world: Here is the info you need to prepare. All semester finals are worth 10% of your semester grade.
Marching Band and Freshman Band: This one is very much up to you. Pick some music that you have enjoyed playing this semester. This can be as simple as one of our scales, to one of the marching band songs, an excerpt from one of the concert pieces we are working on or something you have done on your own. Maybe you take lessons and it is something you’ve played there, maybe you have played a duet or quartet with friends-you can all turn in the same piece, maybe it is just a pop tune or movie tune that you worked up. If it is a longer piece, you can just play a sample of it. It does need to be a new recording, not something you’ve already turned in previously.
An assignment will be posted in Canvas during finals week to submit the recording. Please announce what you are playing at the beginning of the recording. That is the biggest thing: submit a recording! If I get it, you will probably get all of the points for the final.
Jazz Band: This is closer to a traditional final but a little one. You will asked to spell major and mixolydian (dominant) scales. This as a Kami assignment in Canvas. You will type the letter name in uppercase and the accidentals like this “b” for flats and a “#” for sharps. So, an example would be:
Ab Mix. Ab. Bb. C. Db. Eb. F. Gb. Ab. (you don’t need the periods…my computer just does that)
Music Theory: We will do a shortened version of the traditional theory final. Instead of just over four pages, it will be just over one page. We will be reviewing a lot to prepare you. You will need to print off the test then send a picture back to me.
