Hello everyone! I hope you are enjoying your summer and you and yours are staying healthy.
I wanted to give everyone an update as we get closer to camp. There are changes almost daily that may affect school and our camp, but this is the current plan.
Dates and times remain the same. Each day is 7:30-11AM and 12:30-3PM
July 27-Aug 5-percussion
July 27th-new marchers and leaders only
July 28-29-everyone from 1st and 5th hour (freshman band) work together
July 28-Strike Up the Band Night in the stadium
July 30-Aug 5-1st hour only
There will be quite a few restrictions due to COVID 19 during camp. I will send out the full document that lists these next week but some of the most important ones are:
-All students must have masks when we are not playing
-Social distancing must be respected
-Students must bring their own marked water containers
-No sharing of water, instruments, music or stands
-No sharing of food and we can’t provide any-none of those awesome ice towels, either.
-With just a few percussion and tuba exceptions, instruments must go home each day-no use of lockers.
-and there are more but these are the big and most noticeable ones!
Yep, it will be different, but everything will be this year. Again, expect more info and probable changes. I’m still waiting to see exactly what our season (and year) will look like. Flexibility, patience, a positive attitude AND BEING SAFE will be our constants. In the meantime, get ready for camp-be practicing so your chops are strong and get outside and be active so you are ready to handle the heat that is always a part of summer band camp.
Here are a couple of brighter notes:
-Jay and Bryn have been attending drum major camp with all of the other SM drum majors this week. They are doing great! I can tell you that these students are enthusiastic and ready to take this strange year and find a way to make it special (in a good way) for all of YOU!
-Christopher Petrella has been selected to play in the National Association for Music Education’s National Honor Band!!! He will be playing the first trumpet part! He is the first student to represent SMS in this very prestigious ensemble!
-I know you were worried: The Mattress Sale will happen this year! If you or someone you know is thinking of getting a new mattress, get it here. COVID or not, we all need our rest! The sale is Sept. 12th in South’s gym. They are taking a full page of COVID precautions to make sure the sale is safe for all.
-The 5k is also a go for this year but it will be a virtual event. Watch for details on how we can make this another successful event for everyone!
That’s it for now! I’ll reach out again next week with any changes and that full list of restrictions. Whatever this all looks like, I am sooo looking forward to seeing you!
