I'm afraid that we will need to postpone band camp for next week. There are a lot of things going on right now at the state and district level that make it the best decision to let the dust settle a bit and see if we can have our camp in another week or two. None of the SM bands will have camp next week. Even if we had received the OK to do this (I couldn't get a clear yes or no), no student would have been allowed in the school and even the staff wasn't supposed to go in. Imagine the problems for sousaphones and pit percussion! BUT, the truth is, I am actually more upbeat today that we will be able to have camp at some point than when I wrote the post last weekend. Oh, virus, please go away!
In the meantime, play that horn or drum and get out in the sun so that, when it is time, we are ready. Focus on memorizing your pregame and stand music. It is unlikely there will be a contest show this year but we will be developing our musical chops, working on our fundamental marching and put together at least a partial show depending on what our rehearsal schedule can look like once school starts. It won't be a normal year but WE WILL BE THE ROMPIN' STOMPIN' RAIDER BAND! Jay and Bryn have some ideas about that!
Please, do all the stuff you need to do to reduce your chances of getting or giving this virus. I'm sure you agree with me that this thing has been calling the shots for too long. Wear your mask, wash your hands, disinfect often-touched surfaces and avoid large groups of people...especially when you don't feel the group is respecting what needs to be done to stop this thing. Get outside with your friends. The virus doesn't like outside because the breeze disperses it very effectively. I played with a jazz band yesterday in an outdoor neighborhood performance and it felt so good to play music with other people. We all sat at least 6 feet from each other in a big circle and had so much fun playing big band tunes. The drummer and pianist never took off their masks. The horn players all wore theirs until we were setup in our space. The music...your music....can certainly keep going!
OK, keep watching the website and google classroom for updates. I will let you know when I do.
